US Constitution

Ma & Pa's Opinion:
People who spout off information (like it's fact) should be able to source or back up their findings.
Without getting pissy about it!

Original Purpose

The Charters of Freedom is a great site and the source for a majority of the information on this page, but it wouldn't be right to only cite on source.

The American Testament by Adler and Gorman share that, "The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the United States of America."[1]

But let's break this down into easy to understand chunks:
  1. Founding Fathers: 54 men created the first congress (our first governing body) and represented 13 colonies.
  2. Declaration of Independence: signed in 1776, it announces the separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain. It also establishes these 13 colonies as The United States of America.
  3. The Articles of Confederation: Our first attempt at a constitution and were in effect from from March 1, 1781, until March 4, 1789.
  4. Constitution of the United States: signed on September 17th 1787, proposed a strong central government made up of three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial; each would be perpetually restrained by a sophisticated set of checks and balances.
  5. Bill of Rights: the first ten amendments to the constitution., ratified in 1791.

What's Happening Today

It's amazing how little Americans know about the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Did you know?
  • It's the presidents job to uphold the constitution.
  • Ben Franklin is the only person to have signed these four documents: the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Treaty of Alliance, Amity, and Commerce with France (1778), the Treaty of Peace between England, France, and the United States (1782), and the Constitution (1787). Read more: http://www.thepoliticalinsider.com/10-amazing-facts-about-the-us-constitution/#ixzz3utProMsN
  • When the Constitution was signed, the United States’ population was 4 million. It is now more than 321 million. To give this some perspective, 3.8M people lived in Los Angeles in 2014.
