Immigration

Ma & Pa's Opinion:
America is a beautiful melting pot. Legal immigration is good.
Illegal immigration is bad and needs to be stopped.

We are concerned that the number of  illegal immigrants coming into the country [estimated at 8.7M]
vastly outweighs the number being sent home [reported at 314K] [1]

Ma's grandmother and grandfather were both legal immigrants, from Mexico and Italy respectfully.
Pa's family has a long history of American roots. His ancestors migrated from Scotland and England long ago.

Original Purpose

Selected from Wikipedia.[2] Vetting in process.

"During the colonial period independent colonies created their own immigration laws. The first law governing the naturalization of foreigners was the Naturalization Act of 1790. However the later Chinese Exclusion Act was passed to stop the immigration of Chinese people. The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and the Immigration Act of 1924 put a quota on how many immigrants were permitted, based on nationality and the numbers of persons who had immigrated in previous years. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 led to the creation of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

The Department of Homeland Security, which replaced the Immigration and Naturalization Service, enforces immigration laws. The United States allows more than 1 million undocumented immigrants to become Legal Permanent Residents every year."

What's Happening Today

"U.S. Citizenship and immigration Services (USCIS), part of Homeland Security, oversees lawful immigration to the United States.  USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system."

In FY 2014:
  • ICE conducted 315,943 removals.
  • 56 percent of all ICE removals, or 177,960, involved individuals who were previously convicted of a crime.
  • Of the 137,983 individuals removed who had no criminal conviction, 89 percent, or 122,682, were apprehended at or near the border while attempting to unlawfully enter the country.
  • The leading countries of origin for removals were Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
  • 2,802 individuals removed by ICE were classified as suspected or confirmed gang members.

Per Census.gov [3], of the 8.7 million [estimated unauthorized migrants] , 5.4 million (61.5 percent) were Hispanic (Table A-4); and 3.9 million (44.5 percent) were from Mexico (Table A-8).

On an average day the USCIS will welcome 3,000 new citizens. They also process 200 refugee applications around the world, and grant asylum to 40 people already in the United States ~ daily! [1]
