Who the heck said that? Did my ancestors vote on that?
History
I keep hearing people repeating this quote as a reason to support undocumented aliens (a.k.a. illegal immigrants).
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Who wrote that? Why would we want the tired or the poor? Don't we want your able bodied? Why not your smart or strong? Don't we have our own tired and poor to take care of?
This quote comes from Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, New Colossus. Did you know she wrote it to help raise money for the pedestal upon which the Statue of Liberty now sits?
The poem was mostly forgotten until some after her death. Emma luckily had a friend that began a campaign to memorialize her and the New Colossus sonnet. As a result, a plaque with the sonnet was mounted inside the pedestal of the statute.
So this saying that every illegal alien supporter quotes is the opinion of a few, not the majority. Certainly not of Ma & Pa!
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
